Help with VW 6 disk changer!!?

my factory 6 disk changer keeps reading "cd error" and will not play cds. it was disconnected for about 2 months. could it have gotten dusty during this time and need cleaning? in the manual it states that if it reads "cd error" is a dirty or scratched cd, not the player. BUT I have tried many differant cds in the player, even brand new and it still reads the same message. HELP!!
