How do i creat an alias?

iv been watching a show called dexter. its not important but in the show most of the characters use aliases when they are someone suspicious. apperantly no one knows about this fake name because if someone has an alias in the show they need their real name to find them. i think itd be fun and amusing to have a second name...is there a possible way of doing this with legal papers and stuff.
